An electrical contractor is a business providing specialised construction work relating to the design, installation and maintenance of electrical wiring and electrical systems. The term electrician is often used to refer to an individual, qualified tradesman employed by an electrical contractor within some aspect of the electrical services work. Apprenticeships are still a fundamental point of entry into this part of the electrical engineering profession, providing potential electricians the opportunity to gain‘on-the-tools’ training and experience as they complete their professional exams and work alongside fully qualified electricians.

UK Electrical Contractors Association

In the UK, The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) is the main trade association for electrical contractors involved in electrical engineering projects in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Much of the work done by an electrical contractor is guided by publications and standards issued by both the ECA and The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET); specifically the IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2008(2011). Both associations play a key role in electrical standards, safety and training for electricians and electrical contractors.

Thamesgate provides apprenticeships within its electrical services division for applicants who want work for a leading electrical contractor, offering full ‘hands-on’ project work, across the UK and Eire. As an investment in people, the apprentice scheme helps to develop electricians that can deliver outstanding service as part of the Thamesgate team.
